What is Art Therapy?

For some people, finding the right words to express feelings and emotions can be really hard. Art Therapy is a type of therapy that uses art materials and creative expression as a way of communicating feelings, thoughts and experiences.

Together with your Art Therapist, you’ll use a range of art materials to explore the emotions you have and to think about the things going on in your life at the moment. You will talk about the art-making process, about any feelings, memories or thoughts that come up as you create, and about any meaning you feel your creations have behind them.

Your Art Therapist won’t interpret your work and tell you how you feel based on what you create. Your therapist will listen to how you feel and work with you to understand any meaning behind what you make together.

Having a trusting, non-judgemental relationship between you and your therapist is very important to the therapy process, as it helps people feel better about opening up and talking about difficult feelings. Your therapist will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable and will make any necessary adjustments needed to help support you access your therapy.

You can access Art Therapy at Take5 with any of the following emotional difficulties:

  • Anger

  • Anxiety

  • Low Mood

  • Low self-esteem

  • Stress

  • Bereavement

  • Family difficulties
